Home Safety for Seniors

Home safety for seniors covers a variety of topics. There are many things that can go wrong in the home so many steps must be taken to keep seniors safe.

Home safety for the elderly is all about preparation. You need to consider what might happen and prepare for those eventualities. This is the only way to make sure that the elderly in your life will be safe.

Home safety begins with preparation and ends with execution of the plans made during the preparation stage. You have to have plans that can be carried out.

Preventing Trips and Falls

You'll want to begin by taking an honest look at your home. Are there any telephone cords or appliance cords that cross areas that experience any traffic? These are trip hazards. You'll want to find ways to eliminate them as trip hazards before they have a chance to cause an accident.

You want to make your bathroom as safe as possible. It's a prime candidate for slips and falls. You will want to employ non-slip strips to reduce the risk of slippery surfaces. You can also install rails for extra support as you get in to and out of the bathtub.

Remember that you should never use a towel rack for support. It's not strong enough no matter what you might think. It's not designed to support more weight than a few wet towels. It could easily come down as you are holding it and you could go right down with it.

Never place anything on your steps. It's far too easy to forget it or to not see it there. Then you could step on it while walking up or down the steps and fall. You want to avoid this possibility so never store anything at all on your steps.

Emergency Preparation

You'll want to prepare a list of emergency numbers and place it by the phone. This way if there is an emergency, you won't have to look for the right number to call.

Your may want to consider a personal emergency monitoring system. These can often be worn as necklaces or bracelets. All you have to do is press a button and you'll be in contact with someone just waiting to help.

Home safety for seniors requires preparation. Make sure that you are ready for what might happen.
