Bariatric Forearm Crutches

Bariatric Forearm Crutches as with other bariatric medical supplies and equipment are designed for overweight or obese individuals. They are medical devices typically used for people injured somewhere below the waist. The crutches are constructed to provide the user with extra stability to enable normal movement.

There are several types of bariatric crutches; the forearm type has a cuff that is usually made of metal or plastic and may be shaped as a full circle or half-circle with a V-form opening in the front allowing the forearm to slip out in case of a fall. The crutches are often referred to as elbow crutches and are used by simply slipping the arm into the cuff and holding the grip.

Many of the models are made mostly of steel and may have vinyl coated, ergonomically contoured arm cuffs for stability and comfort. The forearm and leg section usually adjust, the hand grip may be of durable vinyl and the tips are extra large for added stability.

Other Possibilities

The Underarm type of crutches is the most common in the United States and is mostly used by individuals with temporary injury or disability. The underarm bariatric crutches are used by simply placing the pads against the ribcage beneath the armpits and holding the grip that is parallel to the pad.

Some of the other possible alternatives include a bariatric knee walker, knee scooter, or wheelchair for people who do not like crutches or cannot use them. There may be additional limitations with these devices as some of these cannot negotiate stairs.

The forearm crutches and the other devices are usually recommended by a doctor based on particular conditions and needs.
